Five Mombasa-based police officers are set to be charged with the murder of a man who died at Changamwe police station in 2018, a few hours after he was arrested for reportedly being in possession of illicit brew.

Inquest into the matter revealed that Mr Caleb Ospino Otieno was booked at the station around 6 pm on September 18 and was three hours later rushed to the Coast General Hospital where he passed on.

The Independent Police Oversight Authority (Ipoa) has recommended murder charges against Nelson Nkanae, Joseph Odhiambo Sirawa, Khalif Abdullahi Sigat, Edward Kongo Onchonga and James Muli Koti following Mr Otieno’s mysterious death.

“The investigation established that Mr Otieno’s death was occasioned by multiple injuries inflicted with a blunt object,” Ipoa statement read in part.

The Office of Director of Public Prosecution after reviewing the IPOA investigations file, agreed with the recommendations to charge the men in uniform.
