Services at the Sh2.7 billion Isiolo International Airport will resume in December this year, the government has announced after the contractor assigned maintenance of 1.4 kilometre runway and construction of cargo shade left the site under unclear circumstances.
Transport PS Solomon Kitunguu, during a recent visit accompanied by the Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Alex Gitari, revealed that the contractor did shoddy work and that a new one was being sought to complete the pending work.
The Sh20.9 million cargo shade has the capacity to hold 10, 000 tonnes daily.
“The government is in the process of reassigning the work to a new contractor so that services resume by December,” Mr Kitunguu said.
Mr Gitari said repair of the runway that has cracks will take two months and will cost an estimated Sh20 million.
The airport has since its commissioning by President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017 been operating below its capacity and used by small chartered planes.
