Three out of 100 people in Tharaka Nithi County are HIV/Aids positive in Tharaka Nithi County, health statistics show.

The county has a total of 8160 people living with HIV/Aids though only 7100 visit health facilities for drugs, supplements and counseling.

Though the infection prevalence rate has dropped from 3.2 percent last year to 2.7 this year, the rate at which youths are contracting the virus is shocking.

According to statistics, 30 percent of the people infected with the virus this year are aged between 15-24 years. This is the age of youths in secondary school and colleges.

“Women are leading in the infection with the prevalence rate of 3.7 percent compared to men with 1.7 percent,” said Mr Mr Antony Murunga, the health officer in charge of HIV/Aids in the county.
