As investigations into how a 20-year-old man who confessed to killing more than 10 children after sexually molesting them escaped from a guarded police cell, three officers who were on duty on the night that the suspect vanished are now persons of interest.
Inspector Philip Mbithi and Constables Boniface Mutuma and Precious Mwinzi based at the Jogoo Road Police Station where Masten Wanjala had been remanded for 30 days pending his arraignment on Wednesday are believed to have aided the suspect to escape.
Mr Wanjala, who was arrested in July this year in connection with two missing children aged 12 and 13 years, last month admitted to killing more than 10 chidren in Nairobi and Bungoma and other parts of the country in a span of five years.
The window and door to his cell was not broken and his disappearance was discovered during Wednesday morning roll call.
Already, the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has directed the Internal Affairs Unit of the police to probe the trio’s conduct and their alleged involvement in the crime.
The sleuths have sought 14 days to continue holding the three officers to allow them complete investigations before they take plea for aiding escape prisoner from lawful custody and neglecting their official duties.
Milimani Law Court will make a ruling over the application tomorrow (Friday).
