Twenty-six primary School teachers, including eight headteachers, three deputy heads, have succumbed to Coronavirus since the country reported its first case in March 2020.
The Teachers Service Commission CEO Nancy Macharia on Thursday hailed the 92,246 teachers who had taken the jab by April 14 and urged the rest to ensure they are vaccinated ahead of school reopening in May.
While condoling with the families of the teachers who succumbed to the disease, Dr Macharia said all teachers regardless of their age will now be allowed to take the Covid-19 jab.
She directed the examiners set to start marking the ongoing KCSE exams next week to take the jab before traveling to Nairobi for the exercise.
“The president has directed us to ensure all teachers take the Covid-19 vaccine irrespective of their age,” she said while urging the teachers to comply with the Ministry of Health protocols meant to stem the spread of the disease.
Teachers who exhibited improvements in their subjects will be rewarded once the Kenya National Examination Council releases the list, according to Dr Macharia.
While responding to the case of the Narok teacher who was walking for many kilometres to deliver KCSE exams to the school which caused uproar online, Dr Macharia said the Commission was not planning to take any disciplinary action against her.
“We urge teachers who walk long distances daily to pick and return the exam papers to the containers to keep up the good job,” she noted.
