A team of police officers and national government administrators in Isiolo have confiscated 180 litres of Chang’aa at Nang’atule market in Isiolo town during a crackdown on Thursday afternoon.
Led by Central Assistant County Commissioner Lucas Muange, the team raided tens of timber houses suspected to be brewing centers of Chang’aa in the area.
Eight suspects, two distillers and six customers, were arrested during the operation where 2000 litres of Kangara used to distill Chang’aa were destroyed.
Mr Muange maintained that the security team was fully committed to ending the illegal business that has destroyed the lives of many young people in the region.
“Youths have been affected as the majority can no longer seek ways to earn a living due to addiction. They prefer this brew as it is cheap but do not know it is harmful to their health,” Mr Muange told journalists.
The administrator announced of a sustained crackdown to ensure compliance and warned those involved in the illicit brew business that the law will soon catch up with them.
“We already know those involved and we are prepared to deal with them,” he said, adding, “We shall conduct regular crackdown until we bring sanity in this area.”
Mr Muange appealed to the public to volunteer information to authorities that could lead to the arrest of other suspects, promising that shared information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
