Several passengers escaped death by a whisker after the Mombasa bound Imani Coach Company bus they were traveling in from Meru was involved in an accident at Thuchi River bridge along the Meru-Nairobi highway.
Mr Jacob Mutegi, an eyewitness said that the driver of the speeding bus was negotiating the sharp corner when he lost its control and it fell at the middle of the bridge completely blocking the road.
Some of the injured passengers including the driver were rushed to Kieni hospital in Embu County and others at Chuka County Referral Hospital in Tharaka Nithi County.
“The speeding fell and skidded on the wet tarmac for about 20 metres blocking the entire road” said Mr Mutegi.
The victims were rescued from the ill-fated bus by other commuters amid heavy rainfall that is falling in the region bordering Mount Kenya forest.
It took traffic police from Tharaka Nithi and Embu counties over six hours to push the bus on one side to allow the flow of the traffic.
