Isiolo Interfaith Network Chairperson Ahmed Sett has asked the government to establish special jails for convicts of terrorism to help tame radicalization that threatens the country’s peace and stability.
Sheikh Sett said having the convicts in the same prison with other offenders will impede the government’s effort to end the vice as they may recruit other prisoners who could later, after serving their terms, get into violent extremism.
“If you jail a convict of terrorism and put him or her in the same prison with other offenders, he will influence and even recruit other convicts,” he said during a public hearing forum on review of laws relating to President’s Power of Mercy as envisaged in Article 133 of the constitution.
Mr Sett who also doubles as the National Council of Elders Treasurer asked the State to introduce a different correctional system for dealing with terrorist convicts.
He also appealed to the government to strengthen the education system in the correctional facilities so that convicts become resourceful upon the expiry of their jail terms.
The government was also asked to improve the state of the prisons so that it is conducive for the prisoners.
