A faction of Isiolo women have benefited from a training organized by Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) in liaison with Nominated Senator Abshiro Halakhe geared towards enhanced women participation in governance.
Tens of women drawn from across the county convened in Isiolo town Friday and were trained on the gender policy and urged to seek elective positions to alleviate the residents from the sufferings they had been facing under male leadership.
Ms Halakhe said it was sad that despite a high population of women in the area, very few were in leadership and encouraged the group not to be intimidated while seeking various leadership positions.
She warned them against overreliance on nominations and urged them to seek elective positions promising to support female aspirants.
“Those nominated including myself should now leave the posts to women who are new in politics and seek elective positions to be able to serve our people better,” she said.
The legislator warned youths against causing violence during political rallies saying the habit had negatively affected the residents.
“When we stir violence we all suffer and our mothers suffer the most. Violence is not a political strategy,” she maintained.
On her part, Samburu Council of Elders chair Ms Joyce Nairesiae urged women to support fellow women vying for various positions.
According to her, female leaders have proven to be better than their male counterparts in delivering to their electorates.
“Our elders should consider women while deliberating on positions. Pastoral communities also should support women leaders,” said Ms Nairesiae.
Ms Abshiro however did not disclose the position she would be vying for but maintained that she is still consulting with different community groups and would declare her interests after the discussions.
