A section of women in Isiolo have pledged to lead efforts to eradicate Gender-Based violence (GBV) through a new program by Waso Hope Community-Based Organization (CBO).
The Haki ni Yetu funded Empowering Women for Equal Rights and Community Inclusion initiative aims to raise awareness, promote women’s rights, and eliminate harmful cultural practices.
Waso Hope CBO Head of Programs Issa Ali said the campaign will empower women with knowledge and tools to take part in leadership and challenge injustices happening in the community.
“Women are powerful agents of change. We are training them how to safeguard their rights and shape the future of their communities,” he said.
During a recent sensitization forum, the women from across the county committed to championing the fight against GBV and FGM at the grassroots level.
Participants were taught how to respond to rape cases, including how to preserve evidence by avoiding preserving clothes worn during the incident in polythene bags, destroy forensic material.
Women were also encouraged to seek counseling services for themselves and their children whenever they experience violence.
The participants expressed concern over a rise in intimate partner violence and incest, particularly instances of young men beating their mothers even in public.
Social Accountability crusader Anab Kassim called on the organisation to train women on social accountability.
“We need to understand how to hold leaders accountable and push for better services in our communities. If we do that, women will have a voice to speak against violence meted on them,” she said.
Waso Hope urged women to take part in grassroots campaigns to push for behavioural change and stronger community action.
The organization also emphasized the importance of reporting mechanisms and building support networks for survivors.
“Real change starts at the community level. We must all be part of the solution,” said Ali.
