Grief has engulfed learners at Moi Nyabohanse Girls in Kuria West in Migori following the death of a after a Form Two student who collapsed and later died under unclear circumstances.
Deborah Nchagwa is said to have been full of life on Sunday morning when she joined other students for breakfast and later to the school field for a poem practice with her friends.
She’s said to have fainted while at the field.
Her friends quickly carried her to the school’s new laboratory, a facility yet to be officially opened, hoping to have her get first aid.
They later rushed to inform the teacher on duty, who was with two other staff members in the staffroom. The teachers, according to the leaders, dismissed the case saying the learner was pretending and that she should be left alone to wake up adding that the school matron was away.
The students would them request the teacher to call the school matron for help which the teacher declined claiming they had no airtime.
At the lab, the patient’s condition was deteriorating when her friends realized her hands were getting cold. They decided to carry her to the staffroom to see whether the teachers would pay attention.
The matron was contacted and eventually arrived with a bottle of surgical spirit, which she applied to Deborah’s face in an attempt to revive her.
She did not respond prompting the matron to urgently call an ambulance that rushed her to the hospital. She was declared dead upon arrival.
Angry students resolved to go on strike accusing the school of failure to act fast, saying such would have prevented the death.
Police have since launched an investigation into the incident as the leaner’s family prepare for her burial.
