The government has launched probe into the strange skin disease that has affected 40 students at St Peters Abwao Secondary in Migori County.
Parents and guardians took to social media lamenting over the infection that has made the skin of the learners turn dark.
Teachers are said to have also been affected in what is suspected to have been caused by water from a borehole at the school which was dug few months ago.
It is suspected that the effects could have been caused by mercury deposits present in water due to nearby gold mines.
“We are not aware if the water has been tested and proven safe for use,” a distraught guardian of a student at the school shared on Facebook.
“I saw a teacher who looked like he had come from a charcoal-burning furnace,” the caregiver reported after visiting the school while asking the government to intervene.
The Ministry of Health has since launched probe into the incident.
