The government has set aside Sh8 billion for construction of 10, 000 classrooms across the country in preparation for junior secondary school rollout under the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) in a year’s time.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has said his administration was committed to ensuring there is adequate infrastructure ahead of the roll out amid numerous complaints from a section of citizens who want CBC abolished.
A section of parents have already gone to court seeking abolishment of the CBC wanting it replaced with the former 8-4-4 system.
“As a caring government and one that appreciates the solemn duty of the State to prepare children for their destiny, we will continue enriching the curriculum to ensure our children sharpen their talents and maximize opportunities,” the President said, while delivering his Mashujaa Day speech.
The head of state further directed the ministries of Interior and Education to establish a framework through which the classrooms would be constructed while ensuring local contractors were involved in the exercise.
He said that local contractors within the vicinity of each particular school would be engaged as a way of reviving the local economy.
He also urged the MPs to prioritize school infrastructure in the National Government Constituency Funds allocation to ensure the learners are comfortable once they transit to junior secondary schools.
