Twenty four (24) families from Kiwanjani in Isiolo have pleaded for humanitarian support after their homes were razed down by inferno.
The residents said efforts to put out the fire bore no fruits as all their belongings in 13 timber houses were reduced to ashes forcing them to spend in the cold and with nothing to fend for their families.
Ms Winnie Gacheri, the owner of the plot, said the fire started in her house before spreading to her tenants’ destroying all household items.
She said that she was in a desperate situation as her husband’s motorbike was destroyed leaving them with no source of income.
“We lost property worth Sh2 million in the incident. We are now homeless with nothing,” she said, adding, “our children are sleeping in the cold despite it being a rainy season.”
Hopeless Sabera Kinya, a tenant, appealed to well-wishers to help them rebuild the houses so that their children can have a shelter.
“The only help we have received so far is food that only took us for few days. We appeal to well wishers to assist us with timber, nails and other things they can afford so that we build our houses again,” said Ms Kinya amid tears.
The families have planned for a fundraiser and appealed to local leaders to support them during the exercise.
“We appeal to our leaders to join us on October 31, 2021 during our harambee and support us,” said Ms Gacheri.
The cause of the last week’s inferno is yet to be established.
