Fear has gripped farmers at Kithima, Kwa Mungania and Maili Nane areas in Buuri, Meru County following an invasion of their farms by swarms of desert locusts.
A gigantic swarm of the voracious insects descended on their farms and residents resorted to traditional methods to scare them away which were futile as the swarms roosted on their farms and devoured their crops.
The farmers have asked the government to intervene and assist in aerial and ground control operations to prevent massive losses.
“We are worried because we might not harvest anything from our farms. The invasion will cause hunger,” said Moses Kirima whose maize plantation has been ravaged by the locusts.
