A section of residents and human rights activists in Isiolo have demanded the arrest and prosecution of police officers who injured six people who were peacefully protesting against Finance Bill 2024.
While accusing police of using excessive force against unarmed individuals and some who were engaging in their day to day activities, the residents called for speedy investigations to ensure justice is served to the victims.
“Chaos erupted because police started firing live bullets. It is unfortunate that we cannot exercise our constitutional rights without police interruption. We demand justice for the victims,” said Ahmed Nassir.
Ms Nuria Bonaya castigated the police for injuring her nephew who is living with a disability and called on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to probe the injustice.
The victim is said to have been shot on the lower back when he was trying to run to safety.
“My nephew was not among the protesters. He was from the market to fetch vegetables for the family. We call for support to settle the hospital bill,” she said.
Another resident Farah Hassan called on the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome to take responsibility of the victims and assure demonstrators of their safety while exercising their constitutional rights.
Human rights activist Grace Lolim called on the government to adopt the culture of addressing concerns raised by residents early enough before they escalate into conflicts or chaos.
“If the government addressed issues when they were raised, there is no one who would have gone to the streets to protest. The government should learn that prevention is better than cure,” she added.
Two of the victims were treated and discharged while four others are receiving admitted at a local health facility.
