Police in Kisii have been allowed to detain for 10 more days a police officer who threw a teargas canister during June 30 Azimio la Umoja rally at Gusii stadium as Raila Odinga’s running mate Martha Karua took to the stage to address the crowd.
Josephat Makori, who denied the charges before Kisumu Chief Magistrate Teresa Odera, will be held at Railway Police Station.
The officer was roughed up by irate members of the public during the incident.
The Prosecution team asked the court not to release him on bail or bond because his life was in danger and could be attacked by furious members of the public.
The suspect had pleaded with the court to grant him bond to enable him take care of his ailing wife and sought more time to nurse the injuries before proceeding with the case.
But the court denied his prayers saying the prosecution had provided compelling reasons to deny him bond terms.
Azimio supporters scampered for safety after the teargas was lobbed at the crowd leaving several people injured.
The case will be mentioned on July 11 and hearing set to start on July 26 this year.
