A man who stole a briefcase with Sh200, 000, a firearm and tool box from a trailer ferrying foodstuffs that was involved in an accident at Maili Saba in Meru has surrendered the items to the owner.
This comes few days after the owner of the vehicle, said to be Indian, issued four days ultimatum to the thieves failure to which he could have sought sought with doctor’s intervention.
The truck that was ferrying bags of rice and flour was involved in an accident at BBC area after it lost control.
Some of the residents who immediately rushed to the scene on hearing a thud, rushed one of the occupants who sustained leg injuries to hospital as another group took advantage of darkness to loot the properties.
One of the known local residents reportedly stole over 30, 50-kilogram bags of rice from the truck before police officers arrived at the scene and dispersed the crowd.
Majority of those who stole the foodstuff have been cashing in from their sale in the last few days.
The residents, who ate the loot, were however lucky after the stolen items and money were returned as the vehicle owner had threatened to “deal with them as well”.
“One of the men took away with the briefcase, removed the money and dropped it together with the pistol that was wrapped in clothes at nearby thicket,” a source told the Press Point.
The remaining food, residents claim, was sold by some of the officers at throw away prices.
