The Isiolo Referral Hospital is on the spot over the recent amputation of a patient’s hand four days after he was admitted to the facility.
Activists led by Isiolo Human Rights Defenders demanded an explanation from the hospital management on the circumstances that led to the amputation of Mr. Ido Hassan’s left arm.
The lobby claimed that health workers after administering several injections on the patient, who was suffering from depression, at the casualty referred him to the Psychiatric ward instead of the normal male ward.
“We are pained following the incident and we will never forgive those who did the inhumane act,” said Ms Abdia Hussein, the patient’s neighbour.
Speaking to reporters in Isiolo town, the activists demanded that the county government takes full responsibility for the loss and compensates the victim.
Mr. Adan Ibrahim said “The man cannot do anything on his own and will now require special care. We want justice and action against those involved”
But Health Chief Officer Ibrahim Alio assured that necessary action will be taken against any health worker who will be found culpable of negligence.
“The matter is under investigation and we will take necessary action should any worker be found culpable of negligence,” said Mr Alio.
According to Alio, the patient was mentally disturbed and unruly when he was taken at the facility and that the amputated arm had a small wound.
“He was injected on the right hand and the left one which was amputated had a small wound. The workers who handled him later found a rubber band that he had tied around his left hand, removed it, and handed it to one of his relatives,” the chief officer noted.
The activists further asked the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB) to probe the matter.
It is alleged the organ started swelling and rotting due to interfered blood flow occasioned by the object that the patient had used to tie his arm.
