At least four persons living with disabilities (PWDs) have benefited from customized motorbikes with a four capacity carriage at the back donated by Abdul Perera, an Isiolo businessman, in an effort to ease their day-to-day mobility challenges.
The motorbikes are modified for use by people with walking challenges and all operations are done by use of hands.
Mr Abdi Waqo, one of the beneficiaries, said the motorbike had greatly changed his life and is now earn a living from it.
“I carry four passengers at a time making between Sh700 and Sh1, 000 daily enough to cater for my family,” Mr Waqo said adding that the motorbike had made his movement easier.
“I am now able to save the money I used to pay for my children’s fare to school because I take them in the morning and pick them after school,” he added.
Mr Adan Halakhe who had closed his tailoring business in town will now be able to quickly move to town from his Bulapesa home and back earning income to support his family.
“I will now resume work because I can move without spending a lot as was before I got the assistance,” he told thepresspoint.com in Isiolo town.
The group slammed local leaders over neglect saying that no one was concerned about their welfare and that many of their members continued to suffer in silence.
“None of our leaders has shown concern about our welfare, no one cares how we survive,” Mr Waqo said.
His sentiments were echoed by Halakhe who said if well supported, persons living with disabilities would achieve a lot and contribute to the growth of the economy.
