Elders from several communities living in Isiolo have eulogized Mzee Phares Rutere who succumbed to Covid-19 related symptoms on Wednesday morning.
Led by Borana Council of Elders Chair Abdullahi Gonjobe, the elders said the country had suffered a huge loss as Mr Rutere, who was the National Council of Elders Chair, knew no bounds while uniting communities living in Isiolo and neighbouring counties.
Mr Gonjobe mourned the late Rutere as a humble leader who represented elders from across the country at national level without bias and or tribe or community.
“He was a father of all and always agitated for peaceful coexistence among communities living in Isiolo ,” said Mr Gonjobe.
Isiolo’s Turkana Council of Elders Chair Nicholas Asuran said Mr Rutere had community at his heart and was a peace maker.
“We condole with his family for the loss and pray that God grants his relatives peace at this mourning time,” Mr Asuran said.
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee Isiolo branch chair Mr Patrick M’Imaara and Njuri Ncheke’s Isiolo chair Geofrey Nabea remembered the departed elder for his relentless efforts to unite residents from diverse communities.
“He had a big heart and loved everyone,” Mr Nabea said adding that Mr Rutere had left an indelible mark in their hearts and lives.
Mr Rutere, 80, died at a hospital in Nairobi where he was receiving treatment after being transferred from Kiirua Mission Hospital a week ago.
