Young people have been encouraged to pursue and preach peace during and after festivities to ensure harmonious coexistence among the communities living in Isiolo county.
While reading out a statement on behalf of the National Council of Churches Kenya (NCCK), Isiolo PEFA Church Reverend Daniel Nderitu stressed on the need for the youths to focus their strength on meaningful activities that are likely to foster peace amongst themselves.
“Young persons are energetic and should shun negative activities that could cause destruction. They require spiritual guidance in order to direct their energy into peace building,” he said.
While drawing his teachings from Hebrews 12:14 that calls on believers to pursue peace persistently, the cleric reiterated the need for Kenyans to embrace each other regardless of any existing differences.
“During public participations, there is a need to be aware that different people have different perspectives and therefore it is important to respect each other’s opinion to ensure peace,” he said, adding that Kenyans must tolerate one another.
Mr Nderitu warned that failure to observe harmony could lead to massive loss of lives and resources, therefore negatively impacting lives and livelihoods.
He also noted that living peacefully was a directive from God through the Holy Bible and it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure peace prevailed.
“Our country will only achieve optimal and meaningful development when there is peace,” he noted.
Rev Nderitu warned the young generation against making decisions out of anger, saying it would lead to more harm that good.
While calling on the believers to constantly pray for their political leaders, the cleric implored the government to incorporate peace in the school syllabus to ensure a holistic education system as well as mentor young children to be peace ambassadors.
“I request the Ministry of Education to restructure the syllabus to incorporate peace from the lowest level of education to the universities,” he added.
His sentiments were echoed by the National Independent Church of Africa (NICA) Mission Diocese Bishop Stephen Kalunyu who called on Isiolo residents instead of focusing on their differences to leverage on their shared elements.
“The similarities between Christians and Muslims are more than their differences. Let’s focus on our similarities,” he said.
The cleric who also doubles up as the County Interfaith Network secretary called for forgiveness amongst christians and the residents.
“Take personal responsibility for peace and build a soft spot for those who have wronged you. Forgiveness is a directive from God,” he said.
