The Independent Oversight Policing Authority (IPOA) has launched investigations into the killing of two brothers who were found dead a few days after they were arrested for reportedly flouting Covid-19 rules.
Emmanuel Mutura and Benson Njiru’s bodies were found lying at Embu Level Five Mortuary on Wednesday and were last spotted at Kianjakoma town on Sunday night while being arrested by police officers on patrol.
Police sources earlier maintained that the duo succumbed to injuries after jumping from a moving police vehicle, that they had been bundled in together with several others, amid claims by the family that the men were killed by the officers.
The two young men, police said, jumped out of the vehicle without the knowledge of the officers who after realizing they were missing at Manyatta Police Station went back to look for them only to find them lying by the roadside with severe head injuries.
IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori said investigators from Nairobi had been deployed to join hands with the Meru Rapid investigators who launched the probe yesterday to fast-track investigations.
“After the conclusion of investigations, we will make recommendations including prosecution if criminal culpability is established on the part of the officers involved,” she said in a Thursday press release.
The official said the Authority handles all complaints with utmost confidentiality while ensuring the processes are fair, independent and impartial.
