An Embu based police officer has been rescued from mob justice for allegedly stealing Sh9, 000 from an Mpesa shop while pretending he was a customer.
Constable Julius Oduor Ayieko attached to the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) in Embu-West, approached Ms Moreen Kanana, the shop’s attendant, at Ndagani market in Tharaka Nithi County at around 8:30 PM on Monday and requested to withdraw cash from the shop.
Police reports indicate that the officer instead got inside the shop through the back door and picked the cash and threatened the attendant with a gun before leaving the premises.
Irate members of the public would minutes later get wound of him and beat him up after Ms Kanana raised an alarm.
The suspect sustained injuries on the forehead, hands and face before police officers arrived and rescued him as the residents bayed for his blood.
One handcuff with no serial number and a scorpion pistol loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition of 9 millimeters were recovered from the officer.
The matter was reported at Chuka Police Station.
