Police in Tigania East have launched a manhunt for criminals who shot dead an officer and injured another last night within Matabithi along Isiolo-Meru border.

The criminals ambushed the two police officers while at Matabithi patrol base post minutes past 11PM.

The deceased succumbed to gunshot wounds at Galaxy Hospital in Isiolo town where the other is hospitalized.

“One of the officers was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital while the other is admitted and in stable condition,” Area Police Commander Peter Karanja told journalists.

The police boss said investigations were underway to nab the suspects and establish the firearm that was used as a spent cartridge was recovered from the crime scene.

“Investigations have been launched to establish the motive of the attack and bring the suspects to book,” he said.

The incident happened barely a week after four people were killed at nearby Kiambogo area in what police said could have been retaliatory attack after body of a 15-year-old boy who had gone missing was found dumped in the area.

Two men are still nursing gunshot wounds at Isiolo Referral Hospital.

Seven people were killed three months ago at Mweronkoro following a clash between Meru farmers and Isiolo herders which prompted the Meru County Assembly to pass a bill barring herders from crossing over.
