A court in Meru has set a mention date of a case involving a man who allegedly murdered his wife by the roadside and carried her body to their bed before later claiming she had committed suicide by taking poison.
Ms Ruth Nkatha, a mother of five, was coming home from a drinking spree in the company of her husband Mr John Kirema and both were drunk on the fateful Sunday.
Reports indicate an argument arose between the two before Mr Kirema, 37, hit the wife with a blunt object and later inflicted several injuries on her body killing her on the spot.
The suspect immediately rushed home and woke up his eldest son and instructed him to accompany him to where his mother’s body lay.
Mr Kirema carried the body of his late wife on his shoulders to their home, laid it on the bed and placed two bottles containing poison next to it to try to convince authorities that the wife had taken poison.
The man then requested one of the neighbors to call the area chief so they could report the incident.
On arrival, the administrator ordered that the man reports to the police that his wife and taken her life but on reaching the police station, the man was arrested.
Residents said the couple had on several occasions been involved in disagreements that led to fights but no one thought the quarrels could result to such an ugly incident.
Tigania Law Court allowed police to continue holding the suspect for two more weeks to allow investigations to be completed and set August 18, 2021 for mentioning of the case.
