A former Mandera County Hospital driver suspected to have aided the killing of a police officer and abduction of two Cuban doctors has been sentenced to life imprisonment.
Mr Isaac Ibrien Robow was ferrying Dr Landy Rodriguez and Dr Assel Herrera Correa with the escort of Police Constable Mutundo Kitambo and another officer in a government vehicle along Mandera-Garissa highway during the April 12, 2019 incident.
The vehicle was attacked by suspected Al-Shabaab terrorists around 9am.
The attackers according to police, seemed well briefed as they first killed the officer who was seated next to the driver before forcefully ejecting the two doctors from the backs seats.
Reports indicate that Mr Robow made no attempt to escape the attackers and did not seem bothered while the incident was happening.
Detectives also established that unlike other similar cases where drivers are usually the main targets so as to stop the vehicle, Mr Robow escaped unhurt.
While delivering the ruling, Milimani Law Court senior principal Magistrate Martha Nanzushi said the court was convinced that the attackers were fully aware of their targets’ sitting positions despite the vehicle’s windows being fully tainted.
