Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki has been ranked the best performing Senator in the Central and Mt Kenya region.
In a recent rating by Infotrak, Deputy President William Ruto’s ally got a 52.6 percent ranking at position eight with his Murang’a counterpart Irungu Kang’ata trailing closely behind with 52.4 percent.
The second term legislator in 2017 then-Senate Majority Leader topped a list of Senators who had the highest number of privately sponsored bills.
Prof Kindiki had by June 2017 forwarded six bills for discussion as proposed laws including Amendments on the Public Finance Management, Alcoholic Drinks Control, Kenya Medical Supplies Authority and County Retirement Scheme bills.
Leading in the country was Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo at 66.4 percent followed by Kipchumba Murkomen of Elgeyo Marakwet who got 58.8 percent.
Samburu’s Steve Lelegwe emerged third with 57.2 percent with his Kwale counterpart Boy Issa Juma at fourth place with 55.4 percent and Kakamega’s Cleophas Malala fifth with 54.8 percent.
Apart from being rated the best performing female Senator in the country, Isiolo’s Fatuma Dullo was the second in Eastern and Northern region at sixth position nationally with 54.6 percent.
While Prof Kindiki led in Mt Kenya (Central and parts of Eastern), he trailed behind Ms Dullo who is among most vocal and popular women legislators in the country.
Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot and his West Pokot counterpart and Senate Majority leader Samuel Poghisio were ranked seventh and tenth positions with 52.8 percent and 52.1 percent respectively.
The ranking has been received with praise and criticism in equal measure with a section of residents wondering if the figures were doctored.
In Tharaka Nithi, some residents who spoke to Press Point lauded Prof Kindiki, who has shown interest in the gubernatorial seat, saying he deserved more than he got with others questioning the poll saying he had done nothing for the electorate.
“We are happy that he is known all over the country but what has he done for us?” posed Charles Mugambi from Chiakariga.
The polls raised concerns from the public on whether they could have been doctored with many wondering the scales that were used in reaching at the figures.
Surprisingly, ally turned foe Governor Muthomi Njuki was eighth best in the counties track performance index and also the best in Mt Kenya region just like Prof Kindiki.
Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi and his Taita Taveta counterpart Granton Samboja recently dismissed their pitiable ranking in recent Infotrak survey on counties performance saying it did not reflect the real situation at the ground in terms of development.
Mr Kiraitu claimed the pollsters had approached him asking for money to give him a favourable ranking.
Most of the Isiolo residents were elated with Senator Dullo’s rating and hailed the leader for continued oversight on Governor Mohamed Kuti administration saying it had seen improved service delivery.
The Party for Development and Reform Senator also the Senate Deputy Majority Leader is believed to be interested with the Governor’s post following continued meetings with various groups where she has been seeking support ahead of the 2022 polls.
While many residents have a lot of trust in the first term Senator and believe she would take them to the Promised Land, many have reservations due to her failure to control emotions while in public and belittling other leaders especially the Governor.
