The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Chairman, Prof Philip Kaloki has announced that the campus under construction in Marimanti town in Tharaka Nithi County will be a regional centre.
Speaking during a meeting with Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki in Chuka town, Prof Kaloki said the campus has enough space for expansion.
“I want to thank Governor Njuki for accepting to allocate more land for the expansion of the campus so that it can be a regional centre,” said Prof Kaloki.
The official lauded the devolved government among other development players in the county for collaborating in the establishment of the two campuses in the region.
He noted that with Chuka and Marimanti campuses, learners from the county will conveniently access medical courses some even commuting from their homes.
“We started with Governor Njuki when he was a Member of Parliament to establish Chuka campus which has more than 600 students and we are still together bringing up another one in Marimanti; he said.
Governor Njuki said that by 2015, Tharaka Nithi County had no single KMTC campus and lauded Prof Kaloki for allowing the establishment of two in a span of few years.
He said that his government is working hard to ensure that the Chuka campus is relocated from Chuka University to its own premises under construction at a five-acre land at Chuka County Referral Hospital.
He said apart from allocating funds for infrastructure in Marimanti campus, his government is ready to give more land for its expansion and also build a bridge to link the institution with the hospital.
“We are currently putting up the necessary facilities in the two hospitals serving the KMTC campuses for student practical” said Governor Njuki.
Njuki noted that already the modern mortuary at Marimanti Sub County Hospital is operational and the new outpatient blocks at the facility and in Chuka County Referral Hospital will soon be complete.
