The national government has released over 1, 800 bags of relief food to be distributed to hungry Isiolo residents who are reeling from the biting effects of drought.
The consignment that includes 200, fifty-kilogram bags of rice, 360, sixty-kilogram bags of beans and 100 cartons of corn beef will be distributed to every Sub-County starting Thursday.
Speaking while receiving the consignment outside the County Commissioner’s office, Deputy Governor Dr James Lowasa said they would establish a committee to spearhead the distribution so that priority is on the neediest families.
“We need to ensure that those who receive the aid are in dire need and we shall take serious action against anyone found selling the relief food,” said Dr Lowasa.
Dr Lowasa said that the county government would also allocate some funds towards purchase of more food to ensure all those affected benefit as the government’s donation was not enough.
“We shall need help for the next three months (because the rains will be suppressed) and therefore need to supplement the donation,” he noted.
Isiolo is among 23 Arid and Semi-Arid counties hard hit by the dry spell that experts warn will worsen.
The National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) said the county’s drought situation is in alarm stage and on a worsening trend with about 145,000 residents in dire need of food.
Principal Chief Hassan Hokicha urged chiefs and their assistants to publicize lists of the beneficiaries for accountability and ensure the food goes to the most deserving.
“Chiefs who will be distributing the food should ensure that those who get the assistance are in need,” he maintained.
Isiolo Parents Association Chair Ismael Galma appealed to the county government to consider schools saying it was affecting learning and contributing to drop-outs.
“Some learners no longer go to school because there is no food there. We appeal for immediate intervention,” he maintained.
