Elders drawn from communities living in Isiolo have called on the youth to forgive MPs who voted for the unpopular Finance Bill 2024, saying reconciliation would enable the country to steer forward.
Led by National Council of Elders Treasurer Ahmed Sett, the elders said the legislators had learnt their mistake and there was no need to continue bashing them for their recent action.
Sett who also doubles as the Isiolo Interfaith Chairperson said the MPs had shown willingness to listen to their constituents for rejecting a salary increment by the Salaries and Renumeration Commission (SRC).
“We appreciate the recent protests that were led by the young people. It is clear that leaders are slowly embracing accountability and following the right path. It is prudent that we forgive them because they have realised their mistakes,” said Mr Sett.
The group urged citizens to give the politicians an opportunity to redeem themselves and invoke their powers at the ballot in 2027 if they fail to protect their interests.
The elders faulted politicians for allegedly planting in goons to disrupt peaceful protests which resulted in deaths, looting and destruction of properties across the country.
Noting that continued violence during the protests had created fear and tension in the country, they implored leaders to cease from interfering with citizens out to exercise their democratic rights.
The elders also want the government to expedite investigations into the death of protesters who were killed by police officers during the protests and take action against those responsible.
“Every Kenyan regardless of their position, are bound by the law. The officers failed to uphold human rights by killing innocent unarmed youths. They should be held accountable,” he added.
Borana Council of Elders Chairperson Abdulahi Gonjobe said Kenya was a peaceful country that has always offered asylum to citizens experiencing unrest in neighbouring countries and must be protected so that she doesn’t sink into anarchy.
“The young people had raised concerns, some which the President has promised to address. We beseech them to call off protests and embrace dialogue,” he added.
Samburu elder Joyce Nairesiae called for responsible parenting to ensure children become responsible citizens.
