Police in Kisumu are holding a 27-year-old man suspected of killing his mother by setting her ablaze in Migingo village.

The suspect, Jeff Onyango is said to have doused the mother Roseline Atieno Nyawada, Migingo Girls High School Deputy Principal, with paraffin before setting her on fire at the school’s staff quarters where both resided.

The incident was discovered by the suspect’s brother Stephen Allan who had gone to visit them around 8PM and whose several knocks went unanswered as the door was locked from the inside.

Police reports indicate that Mr Allan heard some movements inside the house minutes later and after sometime, his brother Onyango opened the door.

With the brother’s face looking worried, Mr Allan immediately stepped into the house and started looking for the mother in living and bedroom to no avail.

He would later be shocked to find his mother’s charred remains in the bathroom.

Police officers who rushed to the scene recovered paraffin in a mug with the bathroom walls blackened with smudge soot.

“A kitchen knife was also recovered besides the woman’s body and a lantern lamp with an open knob,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) shared.

Investigations are ongoing as the suspect is detained at Rabuor Police station awaiting arraignment over murder charges.
