Religious leaders in Tharaka Nithi County have been asked to conduct prayers at River Kathita where six minors have drowned in the last three weeks.
In the latest incident that occurred yesterday evening, three girls who had gone to fetch water at the river drowned while swimming.
Two of them were Grade Six pupils at Kiorimba Primary while the other a Rwatha Primary’s Grade Three learner.
The incident came a week after two others, in Class Seven and Grade Six, drowned in Kithino River.
Three others aged between 10 and 13, all pupils at Gakuyu Primary, had two weeks earlier died after drowning in Kathita River.
Residents want the two rivers “cleansed” of what they say are evil spirits.
Mr James Muiru said the deaths were not normal and called for spiritual interventions.
“This is not normal. Losing eight lives (of minors) in three weeks is so painful. Serious prayers should be done at the two rivers to bring to an end the evil spirits,” he said.
