The Communications Authority (CA) has extended sim card registration deadline by six months to give network operators more time to meet their 100 percent compliance with the Kenya Information and Communications Regulations.
CA Director Ezra Chiloba said network operators and subscribers who will fail to comply by October 15, 2022 will be penalized.
The decision he said was arrived at after several consumers raised concerns citing unpreparedness to fully comply with the directive.
The extension is also aimed at creating more time for the underprivileged persons who were not able to physically visit the shops for registration.
The authority will during the extended period conduct monthly reviews to access progress before undertaking a detailed compliance audit on all the network operators upon the lapse of the six months.
The registration directive was issued last week following an inspection exercise carried out by CA that showed that there were some cards that were registered irregularly while others were issued out for free.
