A section of the Ameru community members in Isiolo have backed the recent impeachment of Governor Abdi Ibrahim Hassan Guyo accusing him of betraying the community despite securing a huge chunk of their votes in the 2022 General Elections.
According to the residents, the community overwhelmingly supported Governor Guyo’s bid hoping to benefit from development projects but none of the promises he allegedly made to them has been honoured.
They said their expectation was that the embattled county boss would work closely with businessman-cum-politician Mwenda Thuranira who rallied the community into supporting Guyo instead of the pioneer Governor Godana Doyo but it never happened.
“We supported Guyo after conviction from Mwenda but we regret because nothing we agreed (with him) has been honoured,” Karithi said.
Among the benefits the group hoped to reap was improved healthcare services, proper road network across the county as well as completion of the stalled projects.
Youth leader George Karithi accused Governor Guyo of failure to honour promises made to the community and individuals who greatly contributed to his win.
“We had hope that he would complete the market offering a conducive environment for businesses. That has not been done. The referral hospital is also in a deplorable state while we have had a Governor in place for two years,” said Mr Karithi.
Boda operator Francis Lopiyo said poor state of the feeder roads had left them struggling as they were forced to incur more maintenance cost for their motorbikes.
“It saddens me that I have to repair my motorbike thrice a week, cost that consumes my entire profit, exposing me to inexplicable suffering,” he said.
He urged the community not to sell their votes in future elections and said they would follow Mwenda’s political direction.
Another resident Moses Mugo said the Governor’s impeachment was long overdue and praised the MCAs for taking a bold step and demanding accountability.
Some 16 out of 18 MCAs June 26 voted to oust Governor Guyo accusing him of abuse of office, gross misconduct and mismanagement of public resources among others.
His fate lies with the Senate with speaker Amason Kingi confirming to have received a notification of the ouster from the county assembly and set to provide further directions on Monday, June 30, 2025.
