Nine journalists and Mbeere South MP Geoffrey King’ang’i, arrested during an eviction exercise conducted by police officers at Makima in Embu County, will spend the night at Matuu police station in Machakos County.

The legislator had gone to console the evicted families who were counting losses due to the evictions when officers pounced on them.

More than 100 officers were present manning the exercise to clear land that reportedly belongs to Tana and Athi Rivers Development Authority (Tarda) when the MP addressed the reporters condemning the act.

Residents blamed the government for the failure to notify them of the evictions and causing the destruction of the properties.

Among the journalists arrested are Joseph Mukundi of Royal Media Services (RMS), Coro FM’s Mary Wangari, Denis Makenge of U-TV and Standard Group’s William Moige.

The evicted families will spend the night in the cold with several stating that they were unlawfully evicted since that was their ancestral land and some had even buried their kin in the area.
