More than 5, 000 households from six wards in far-flung areas of Isiolo County are set to benefit from solar power following the launch of the World Bank’s funded Sh500 million Kenya Off-grid Solar Access Programme (KOSAP).
The project targets Sericho, Garbatulla, Kinna, Burat, Oldonyiro and Cherab wards and will see 5, 323 households and nearby public facilities such as schools, offices and hospitals connected with solar power for enhanced service delivery.
Reports indicate that the targeted villages have already donated a five-acre piece of land where power mini stations will be established.
The project will also see at least 20 boreholes dug across the wards to end water crisis and insecurity cases.
Isiolo Governor Mohamed Kuti said besides the solar power connection, the villages will also benefit from Sh1 million community project of their choice as a kind donation for giving out the land.
“The project will upon completion enhance service delivery especially in the local health centers that have no power connection,” said Dr Kuti adding that by mid-2022, all the households will be connected.
