Hundreds of residents across four Sub Counties in Mandera have asked the state to swiftly include them in the emergency flood mitigation plans to enable them rebuild their lives following the devastating floods that led to loss of their livelihood.
The residents from Lafey, Mandera North, Mandera East and Banissa areas lost their homes, farms and businesses following the heavy rains and are currently wallowing in poverty with their only hope being cash transfers initiatives by local humanitarian organizations.
“My farm was submerged while crops were nearing maturity. I lost everything. I have nothing to support my family with,” noted Mr Adan Shariff.
Reports indicate that more 5,000 hectares of farms in Mandera have been destroyed by floods, with experts warning that it could pose a major threat to food security in the county.
Tens of residents are also yet to return to their homes after they relocated to safer grounds for their safety.
“We are relying on well-wishers for a place to sleep while we anticipate the government support us with basic necessities,” said Ms Hadija Osman.
The government had months ago promised to resettle those displaced by floods across the country but nothing has been done.
