Isiolo’s Turkana community elders have surrendered a rifle to police as crackdown continues to smoke out criminals who shot and injured 10 police officers at Makinya within Meru/Isiolo border.
The community has so far handed over to police 13 firearms since the operation was started in Ngaremara ward where the over 300 bandits are suspected to be hiding.
Led by Ngaremara MCA Ekwam Teru, the elders said they will continue working with police in finding a lasting solution to banditry and cattle rustling that continue to trouble communities at the border of the two counties.
The elders also handed over 111 shoats that were stolen from Meru few days ago.
Some leaders including Woman Rep Rehema Jaldesa have called for suspension of the operation which has seen hundreds of families flee their homes fearing the authorities wrath.
The community have accused police of punishing the community for sins committed by a few criminals and called for fairness in the exercise which the government insists is still on.
