Elders from communities living in Isiolo have urged newly elected leaders to focus on solving many challenges bedeviling the electorates.
They lamented that residents were grappling with water crisis and hunger due to the prolonged drought in the county.
Isiolo County Council of Elders Chair Mr Abdullahi Gonjobe they said there was need for the leaders to prioritize provision of relief food to families facing hunger.
“There are people who are seriously affected (by drought) and we urge the government to use taxpayers’ money in the right way by cushioning those who are suffering,” said Mr Gonjobe.
Speaking at a peace meeting organized by Merti Integrated Program (Mid-P), the Wazee rallied elected leaders to unite and put aside their political differences so as to achieve development for the county.
“They (leaders) strive to serve everyone regardless of whether or not they voted for them,” said Samburu Council of Elders chair Joyce Nairesiae.
The Samburu elder lamented rising cases of domestic violence and school drop outs occasioned by poverty and urged the incoming leaders to provide lasting solutions.
“The government should look at us with eyes of mercy while we share the remaining water in the streams with our neighbours,” she appealed.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, they revealed that they had buried their political differences and urged the communities to follow suit.
“Supporting different candidates does not make us enemies. Political period is gone and we will remain brothers and sisters,” said Mr Gonjobe.
