The young people in Isiolo have been urged to embrace Ajira digital platform to access online opportunities in order to work and earn a livelihood.
The platform, initiated by the government, seeks to equip young people with skills and tools to enable them to work comfortably online.
Speaking during a stakeholders meeting that brought together entrepreneurs in Isiolo, Ajira Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Mr Richard Masore said over one million young people had benefited with the program across the 350 empowerment centers established to provide working spaces, computers and free internet across the country.
“Through introduction of sustainable policies and regulations the government is keen on creating an enabling environment for the youth to work online and earn a living,” said Mr Masore.
His sentiments were echoed by the program’s coordinator at KEPSA Dr Ehud Gachugu who said there was a need for stakeholders to explore new alternatives to sustain employment.
“The digital economy is one of the alternatives that continue to indicate significant power in creating employment opportunities for the young people both locally and internationally,” said Mr Gachugu.
Ms Sadia Hassan, a beneficiary, who is currently volunteering at the UNDP lauded the project but appealed to the government to fast track internet connection in the remote parts of the county that still lags behind.
“With the digital skills and mentorship I acquired through the Ajira digital program I earn about Sh20, 000 monthly that has enabled me to sort my bills,” she said.
The program has benefited over 200 youths across the county with skills and opportunities to work online with both local and international corporations.
