Police in Meru have launched probe to establish whether the reportedly stolen cattle that Oldonyiro MCA David Lemantile was found in possession of were indeed put under his custody by the police as he claims.
The MCA, according to the police, claimed that seven of the animals were put under his custody after they were recovered following last year’s banditry attack where several animals were stolen from the Samburu community.
It is then that elders from his Samburu and Turkana communities agreed that he keeps the animals pending investigation and identification, an agreement that the MCA said was allegedly sanctioned by Isiolo police officers.
Mr Lemantile Tuesday presented himself at Ruiri Police Station after a Cyprian Kinoti identified one of his cows from his (Lemantile’s) herd that he claimed to have been among his 72 animals that were stolen in April 2020.
Detectives are banking on the elders and their Isiolo counterparts to verify the claims.
The law however bans anyone from keeping stolen property which is majorly police mandate and is allowed until investigations are completed.
