The first Kenyan post-independence Attorney General Charles Njonjo has died at 101 years.
Mr Njonjo, who was to celebrate his birthday on January 23, passed away around 5AM on Sunday morning at his Muthaiga home.
The late who served as Constitutional Affairs Minister between 1980-1983 was the only surviving member of Kenya’s independence cabinet.
President Uhuru Kenyatta eulogized Mr Njonjo as a great icon who played a role in the attainment of Kenya’s independence.
“As a nation we owe a debt of gratitude to Hon Njonjo and his generation of independence era leaders for their selfless contribution to the laying of the solid foundation upon which our country continues to thrive,” said Mr Kenyatta.
Cremation of Mr Njonjo’s remains started at 10:30AM and is still underway.
According to close family members, the late had instructed to be cremated immediately after his death.
Mr Njonjo is survived by his wife Margaret whom he got married to aged 52 years, daughters Elizabeth Wairimu and Mary Wambui and son Josiah David and many grandchildren.
