Police in Machakos are holding a woman who was reportedly arrested while transporting 250 kilograms of sandalwood species whose government outlawed its harvest in 2007.
The 42-year-old Beth Wangui was nabbed by a multi-agency team along Athi River while she was heading to Mombasa and upon search, fine grained pieces of the wood estimated to be worth Sh750, 000 were recovered concealed in the trunk of her vehicle.
The tree, predominantly found in Samburu and Baringo counties, is used for its essential oil which when extracted is used to manufacture cosmetic and some kind of medicine.
The suspect will be charged with dealing with endangered wildlife upon completion of the ongoing investigation.
