The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has embarked on a countrywide series of training to enlighten young people from its member churches on the need for them to actively engage in politics and governance issues.
Hundreds of youth representatives from Marsabit, Isiolo, Meru and Tharaka Nithi converged at Isiolo town Methodist Church for a two-day-workshop that seeks to equip young people with leadership skills and help them realise their full potential.
Led by the region’s youth Representative Ms Linda Mwirigi, the group accused political leaders of sidelining them on decision making and development issues and vowed to speak in one voice and chart a united path to ensure their issues are well taken care of.
“Young people have realized that they are in most cases sidelined by the leaders and have decided to speak in one voice and seek leadership positions to ensure their voices are heard,” said Ms Mwirigi.
The youths accused the four county governments of neglect and not creating job opportunities for them and maintained that they were committed to ensuring their rights are safeguarded by those taking up leadership positions in the region and nation at large.
Mr Dennis Kimathi, urged fellow youths to come out and join the team in agitating for what was rightly theirs as well as supporting leaders with their interests at heart.
“We shall scrutinize the aspirants keenly and rally our communities into electing leaders who are not out to fulfill their selfish desires,” Mr Kimathi stressed.
Isiolo NCCK branch Chairperson Nathan Maingi appealed to the group to enlighten others in their home counties for a united front.
