Isiolo County Government has rolled out food distribution exercise to cushion residents from the biting effects of drought and hunger.
A food consignment to benefit 20, 340 households from the three sub-counties was flagged off on Saturday.
The families will each benefit with six kilograms of maize flour, five kilograms of rice and sugar, two litres of cooking oil and two packets of tea leaves.
The county government targets the most affected families while waiting for national government’s animal feeds distribution.
Governor Mohammed Kuti said his administration was keen on ensuring that worst-hit residents had enough food saying that they relied on data provided by the National Drought and Management Authority to identify the most vulnerable families.
“Everyone is needy but we identified the most vulnerable cases to benefit from the food items,” said Dr Kuti.
The county boss asked the concerned county officials to ensure the donation benefits the targeted beneficiaries.
“My administration will do a follow and I appeal to the government agencies to also make effort in following up the donation so that it directly reaches the intended persons,” he said.
Ms Hadija Mohammed, a beneficiary, lauded the county government for the effort saying the donation would take her family for two weeks but appealed for extension of the assistance for others to also benefit.
“We thought the government had forgotten us but we are happy that help has finally come. We request them to bring us some more food because it is not enough for everyone,” she said.
