Detectives in Meru have arrested a police officer attached to Meru Deputy Governor Titus Ntuchiu’s home who reportedly shot dead a man who trespassed into the home and started threatening workers who were harvesting maize on Friday evening.

The 29-year-old Morris Mutuma was shot dead after allegedly threatening to hack one of the officers, who responded to a distress call from the workers, with a machete at Kimachia-Chung’ari village in Tigania West.

Residents protested the incident and demanded legal action against the officer who they said could have tried to prevent the deceased from committing the crime by firing in the air.

Eye-witnesses said the officer chased the deceased for more than 500 metres before killing him.
