The arrest and arraignment of Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua was not politically instigated but based on evidence gathered, the Director of Public Prosecutions has said.

Mr Noordin Hajj said the investigations file had compelling evidence for the legislator to be arraigned in court and that the arrest had nothing to do with politics.

The MP was arrested at his Mathira home over an alleged tender involving companies associated with him where more than Sh12 billion was processed through his accounts.

He was charged with among others fraudulent acquisition of public property, money laundering and conspiracy to defraud the Nyeri County government and was released on Sh12 million bail or Sh25 million bond for the six counts.

The DPP office was handling more than 50 cases of politicians prosecuted for fraud, Mr Hajj said.
