Police in Vihiga have launched a manhunt for seven suspects and a convict who escaped from police custody at Serem Police Station on Friday morning.
Police sources indicate that nine of the suspects held at the station ran away around 6:30 am when an officer on duty was opening the door to one of the cells to serve them breakfast.
Mr Santos Muhindi, Carlson Jiseve, Maurice Taabu, Kevin Mujivani, Nelson Simba, Clinton Vidolo, Emmanuel Shirisia, and Hillary Pasaka had been detained for various crimes including assault, defilement, stealing, and burglary while Dennis Marava had been convicted of defilement and jailed for 20 years.
An immediate search by police officers that included firing in the air led to the arrest of Mr Taabu who was taken back into the cells.
Police reports indicate that the incident happened while another officer who was at the reports office had excused himself.
