Students of the Kenya Water Institute (Kewi) campus, under the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, have protested adminstration policy requiring them to pay 60 percent of the semester fees before admission.
The irate students yesterday (Monday) barricaded Marimanti-Embu road protesting the move that they said was exposing those from poor families to abject suffering. The students also complained over poor services and limited internet access.
Confrontation ensued as the students pelted stones towards police officers who had been sent to calm the situation forcing them to use teargas to disperse them.
A number of students were arrested and detained at Ciakariga Police Station following the protests.
Those unable to pay the required percentage of fees, the students said, were still at home as could not be allowed to attend the classes.
The campus Principal Jacob Gitonga maintained that the students must pay 60 percent to rid the struggle they previously had in compelling them to clear the arrears.
